Inventory & collections
Photograph and catalog computers, peripherals, books, and accessories. Record model numbers, condition, provenance, and storage locations.
Help bring the Long Island Vintage Computer Museum to life. We’re preparing to open, preserving vintage computers and their stories, and developing hands-on learning for the next generation.
You don’t need to be a computer expert to contribute. Careful organizers, writers, photographers, teachers, and people willing to learn all have something to offer.
Photograph and catalog computers, peripherals, books, and accessories. Record model numbers, condition, provenance, and storage locations.
Research the machines and the people behind them. Write and fact-check hardware histories and human stories, help record narration, and prepare captions or transcripts.
Set up computers and peripherals, document their condition, and help test and troubleshoot machines with guidance. Work on electrical repairs only within your skills and with an agreed plan.
Identify, organize, and build a library of software that visitors can run. Match titles to compatible machines, test loading instructions, and develop short demonstrations using software we have permission to use.
Help prepare announcements, photographs, flyers, and social posts. Introduce the museum to local schools, libraries, clubs, and people interested in computing history.
Help plan monthly in-person vintage computer user group meetings, suggest demonstrations, and welcome newcomers. Meeting dates and arrangements are still being developed.
Help develop hands-on activities in programming, electronics, and troubleshooting. Turn an interesting machine into an approachable learning experience.
Organize manuals, schematics, spare parts, and repair notes. Document what was changed so future volunteers can understand and maintain the collection.
Help make labels and instructions easy to follow, check QR links and captions, and prepare to welcome visitors once the museum opens.
Email volunteer@livcm.org with the tasks that interest you, any relevant experience, and your general availability. Tell us whether you prefer on-site work or tasks such as research and writing that may be done remotely.
There is no need to commit to a regular schedule in your first message. We’ll discuss a suitable task and the arrangements with you. The museum is not yet open to the public; please arrange any visit with us in advance.
